The following towns are listed by their current county in the Federal Census from 1820 to 1870 as having black citizens at some time in those 50 years. An * means 15 or more blacks at any given census,  ** around 100,  *** around 400,  + means there is no contemporary listing of that town & county or it may have been an error.
Blacks were first identified as "Free Colored Persons" or "free colored;" by 1860 they were divided into
"Black" and "Mulatto;" and by 1870 "colored."  We look at the census as an indicator, not an exact science.
